Side note: Dragon Ball did not introduce the 'edgy rival trope' AT ALL. Dragon Ball also influenced the mecha anime of the early 90s quite heavily, culminating in Gundam Wing. This is why Toriyama is so often hailed as a genius - he established an entire language that shonen mangaka have been using ever since. The obsession with martial competition and one-on-one fighting was established by Dragon Ball, the arc-based structure of the genre, all kinds of visual elements, the emphasis on 'power-levels', countless other examples. It transformed the shonen genre completely. Their transformations into heroes are all mediated by one of those three things. If you look at the cast of DBZ, over half of the major characters were, at some point, rivals or outright villains. Hard work, friendship, and self-improvement are all different aspects of the same thing, and comprise the primary forces of good in the world.
